Brind'Amour out, Staal in as Canes captain
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has named Eric Staal as the new team captain for the Hurricanes. Staal is the fifth captain since the team’s arrival in North Carolina, and the 13th player to serve in that role in franchise history. Rod Brind’Amour had served as captain from Aug. 25, 2005 until today, and will remain an alternate captain.

“Rod has been the consummate leader for the Hurricanes since his acquisition nearly 10 years ago,” said Rutherford. “He is the only captain in franchise history to lift the Stanley Cup, and he will continue to play a leadership role in our organization.

“The time has come now for Eric to assume the top leadership role for his teammates. This is part of the rebuilding process for the Hurricanes, as Eric is the player around whom the team will be structured. We feel confident in Eric’s ability to lead his teammates and are excited to begin this next era.”

Staal, 25, ranks second among Hurricanes with 33 points (10g, 23a) this season, despite missing 10 games with an upper-body injury from Nov. 4-Nov. 23. Since returning from that injury, the Thunder Bay, Ont., native has totaled eight goals and 20 assists (28 points) in 23 games. Prior to missing time this season, Staal had played in 349 consecutive games for Carolina, the longest consecutive games-played streak for the franchise since it relocated to North Carolina. Drafted by the Hurricanes with the second-overall selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Staal has totaled 174 goals and 217 assists (391 points) in 445 career regular-season games with Carolina. He has notched 19 goals and 24 assists (43 points) in 43 career Stanley Cup playoff games for the Hurricanes, helping Carolina capture the Stanley Cup in 2006 and reach the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009.

    It's time for a change
Is it me, or do we just suck this year? All these injuries and these players with big contracts and we can't even put a puck in the goal. Any thoughts?

    Oh snap.

This first upset me a great deal. Hockey season is UPON US. But it appears that there are no Hurricanes games scheduled to be on Versus, so I think I'll survive. Stupid TV service companies and their greed & drama.

Versus is no longer available on DIRECTV

•NHL: Available on NHL Network, NHL Center Ice, and your RSN.

    Interesting tidbit from NHL.com article:
"[During the regular season, g]oaltender Cam Ward was undefeated against Pittsburgh, going 2-0-0 with a 1.49 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage."

The talking heads will tell you that Carolina and Pittsburgh split their season series, but both our losses were when Leighton was in goal. When Ward was in the crease, we've been exceptionally good against them.

    The beard continues...
I went to bed early last night, before the game ended, and woke up this morning to find out I can't trim my beard yet! Back when the playoffs started, I trimmed my beard to a #2 (1/4 inch), which is where I normally keep it, and pledged not to trim again until the 'Canes were eliminated from the playoffs. It's now about an inch to an inch and a half long (chin grows faster than sideburns), and I know I won't be able to trim it for at least another 2 weeks.

Interesting trivia: All odd seeds have now been eliminated from the playoffs. Detroit is #2, Chicago and Pitt are #4 and the Canes are #6.

Also, LOL Boston. He must have missed the part where we beat Edmonton for the Stanley Cup...

    Looking forward to round two.
New member here *waves*. The Canes have been the undisputed Comeback Kids of the playoffs so far, but Boston is really going to test them. I think the outcome of this series will be determined mostly by goaltending, but our boys in red need to bring their physical 'A' game if they're going up against guys like Lucic, Chara, Ward, etc.

The fact that the Bruins haven't played in 9 days might be a factor tonight. The Canes are on an upswing after that thrilling game 7 victory, so maybe the B's might not have the same energy. Plus, Boston might be cocky and underestimate the Canes which would be a big mistake (just ask Mary Brodeur).

The Whitney-Staal-LaRose line needs to be huge and they haven't disappointed so far, but the Canes need to have all 4 lines producing. If Cam Ward continues to shine and if they get some big hits from Ruutu, Cole and Gleason I really think they can give Boston a hard time. Canes can win the series, but it will probably go 7 games.

Hang on, Caniacs...it's going to be a rough ride.

    Game 3
Canes played a pretty good and entertaining game last night, lots of good PK and some great energy. But if we can't get our defense in line by Tuesday, this series is already over.
Is it too much to ask for our defense not to trip over each other, complete a pass without turning it over, and help out Cam a little? In my opinion, after last night's game, bench Corvo and put in Seidenberg. I can almost stomach the "dump and chase" if we can re-tune our D.
Let's hope the Canes can pull out a victory on Tuesday ... we don't want to go back to NJ down 3-1!

    Game vs Florida
Did anyone watch the highlights on the Canes website? (I do since I'm in DC and can't see them on TV.) They had the audio of the Florida announcer, who said the dumbest things I've ever heard when Florida scored.

So last night we won against The New Jersey Devils. Any thoughts about tomorrow night's game against the Islanders and Saturday night's game against the Capitals? Just hoping we can stay strong and not bump out of the number eight spot.

So can we keep up the killer offense tonight against the Rangers?

I can't believe the games we've been having against Washington, then Calgary and then destroying Tampa Bay??

Please please keep this winning streak alive!

Wow, it's been a long time since someone posted in this community. Anyways, is it me or do the canes just suck this year? Their defense is totally messy. I also think you should retire Rod. Using Cam Ward and Eric Stall isn't going to help your team win. Its either time for some trades or a new coach.

    Canes winning streak
So the Hurricanes actually have a 3 game winning streak. They are 7th in the Eastern Conference and play a hard New Jersey Team tonight.

Can they keep it going and grab a much needed 2 more points to help in the standings?

My 1 time hockey store shill
I don't want to taint this carolina hurricanes lovefest/hatefest, but I do want to take the opportunity to say I do have a Cafepress.com store devoted to hockey clothes for  babies, and kids, and adults.

    In the Neaux Hockey wear

You can get some cool presents for christmas and the holidays for your loved ones!

Now that that is out of the way, The Canes play Montreal tonight. We had an amazing shootout win against Tampa Bay on Sunday, thanks to Ruutu and Brindy. Can these players motivate the rest of the team to actually play their "A" game tonight??
